‘All the world is a stage’ – Shakespeare

Shakespeare in his play, ‘As you like it’ says that world is a stage. He compares men and women to players. What Shakespeare says is correct. Actors play their parts on the stage. Men and Women play their parts in the world. They play their parts in drama of life and on stage of life. The actor plays many parts. So do men and women.

First they are small babies, then they became children and after that a grown up person. Men enters various walks of life, so do some women. Others play their parts in the home as wives and mother. The actor after finishing his part leaves the stage. Men and women after playing their parts in the world, leave it. Thus each men has to play his part whether he likes it or not. He may have to play the part of a King or a Beggar, a General or a soldier, a patriot or a traitor. If he acts his part well, he is cheered and applauded. If he doesn’t do so, he is criticized and dishonored.

The actors have the entrance and exit. So year after year men and women appear on the stage of the world. After having played their parts, they vanish in the darkness of night. The old generation passes away, the new generation takes its place. The actors pretend to do what they are not. Men and women also do so. We do not know anything about their innermost thoughts, ideas and feelings. They may appear happy but actually they may have no happiness. Thus, the world is a stage and all the men and women are players.

A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” – William Shakespeare
